Program Overview
Currently, it is estimated that approximately 2.3 million US adults have atrial fibrillation, which increases risk of stroke and accounts for 1/6 of all strokes in the US.  Although equal numbers of men and women are currently diagnosed with AF, studies have shown that female atrial fibrillation patients have a higher rate of stroke and death than men, with women accounting for nearly 2/3 of stroke-related deaths.  Additionally, women frequently differ from men in their atrial fibrillation presentation and medical co-morbidities.  In order to properly oversee female AF patients, pharmacists need to be updated on recent research about existing and novel anticoagulants, the signs and symptoms specific to omen that would require intervention, and beneficial treatment options for women which may have previously been overlooked.

Nurse Educational Objectives
  • Identify the under-recognized risk of strokes in women diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, and the associated morbidity, mortality, and cost burdens
  • Provide an update on the efficacy, safety, and role of the available treatments for anticoagulation therapy in atrial fibrillation.
Pharmacist Educational Objectives

  • Provide an update on the efficacy, safety, and role of the available treatments for anticoagulation therapy in atrial fibrillation.
  • Outline the compliance communication strategies between pharmacists and their patients about the benefits and risks of anticoagulation therapy, especially with women.
