CDC estimates that more than one million people are living with HIV in the United States. One in five of those people living with HIV is unaware of their infection. Despite increases in the total number of people living with HIV in the US in recent years, the annual number of new HIV infections has remained relatively stable. However, new infections continue at far too high a level, with an estimated 56,300 Americans becoming infected with HIV each year. More than 18,000 people with AIDS still die each year in the US. This knowledge based program will educate pharmacists in HIV treatment principles and current guidelines for use of antiretroviral therapy and offer insights into how pharmacists can make a difference in treatment outcomes. This program is Florida BOP approved for HIV.

Vaccinations are one of the few interventions that has been shown to reduce overall healthcare costs. As more vaccines come onto the market, so does the controversy over the use and need for these new products. As pharmacists continue to grow as primary immunizers, it is more important than ever to know why vaccinations make sense for patients in certain demographics. Pharmacists also need to be able to address the concerns of their adult patients. This presentation will review the pros and cons of adult vaccinations and assist the pharmacist in being an advocate of vaccinations for specific patients.

Schizophrenia is typically a chronic mental illness whose full symptoms - including hallucinations, disorganized thinking, and social withdrawal - become evident in early adulthood. In many cases of adult-onset schizophrenia, nonspecific disturbances in cognition and socialization may be evident in young patients. Less common, but more severe, presentations of schizophrenia include Early Onset Schizophrenia (EOS) and Very Early Onset Schizophrenia (VEOS) whose full symptoms become evident at ages 13-18 and prior to age 13, respectively. These diagnoses have significant implications for childhood development and drug treatment. This activity will increase the clinician's awareness and ability to assist in the management of patients with these disorders.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) publishes drug safety communications on a frequent basis and in 2011, over 50 drug safety communications have been issued. It can be difficult for pharmacists to stay up-to-date with these communications and determine which communications should result in changes in practice. This evidence-based, patient case presentation will review several drug safety communications that effect everyday practice. The risks and benefits for patients taking simvastatin, varenicline, celexa, pioglitazone, drosperinone, bisphosphonates, and other medications will be discussed. The participant will be able to determine the significance of various safety warnings and develop appropriate therapeutic options for patients impacted by these FDA safety communications.

Asthma is a disease of diffuse airway inflammation caused by a variety of triggering stimuli resulting in partially or completely reversible bronchoconstriction. The prevalence of asthma has increased continuously since the 1970s, and it now affects an estimated 4 to 7% of people worldwide with more than 20 million people in the U.S. affected and about 4000 deaths occurring from asthma annually in the US. Asthma is the leading cause of hospitalization for children and is the number one chronic condition causing elementary school absenteeism. The etiology of asthma is multifactorial and depends on the interactions among multiple susceptibility genes and environmental facrots such as allergy exposure and diet. The diagnosis is based on history, physical examination, and pulmonary function tests. Treatment involves controlling triggering factors and drug therapy, most commonly with inhaled B2-agonists and inhaled corticosteroids, but also with leukotriene modifiers, mast cell stabilizers, and methylxanthines. This presentation will review the basics of asthma and its subtypes and highlight management strategies for complications associated with new therapies.
