CDC estimates that more than one million people are living with HIV in the United States. One in five of those people living with HIV is unaware of their infection. Despite increases in the total number of people living with HIV in the US in recent years, the annual number of new HIV infections has remained relatively stable. However, new infections continue at far too high a level, with an estimated 56,300 Americans becoming infected with HIV each year. More than 18,000 people with AIDS still die each year in the US. This knowledge based program will educate pharmacists in HIV treatment principles and current guidelines for use of antiretroviral therapy and offer insights into how pharmacists can make a difference in treatment outcomes. This program is Florida BOP approved for HIV.

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood disorders and can continue through adolescence and adulthood. Symptoms include difficulty staying focused and paying attention, difficulty controlling behavior, and hyperactivity (over-activity). The American Psychiatric Association states in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) that 3%-7% of school-aged children have ADHD. This knowledge based program will enhance the understanding of ADHD and its causes, symptoms, treatment, and medications. The program will include an in-depth comparison of the available medications to include dosages, metabolism, side-effect profile and reasons practitioners select specific medications for individual patients.

Vaccinations are one of the few interventions that has been shown to reduce overall healthcare costs. As more vaccines come onto the market, so does the controversy over the use and need for these new products. As pharmacists continue to grow as primary immunizers, it is more important than ever to know why vaccinations make sense for patients in certain demographics. Pharmacists also need to be able to address the concerns of their adult patients. This presentation will review the pros and cons of adult vaccinations and assist the pharmacist in being an advocate of vaccinations for specific patients.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) publishes drug safety communications on a frequent basis and in 2011, over 50 drug safety communications have been issued. It can be difficult for pharmacists to stay up-to-date with these communications and determine which communications should result in changes in practice. This evidence-based, patient case presentation will review several drug safety communications that effect everyday practice. The risks and benefits for patients taking simvastatin, varenicline, celexa, pioglitazone, drosperinone, bisphosphonates, and other medications will be discussed. The participant will be able to determine the significance of various safety warnings and develop appropriate therapeutic options for patients impacted by these FDA safety communications.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a syndrome of behaviors characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. ADHD affects approximately 10% of the childhood population and it is estimated that somewhere between 10 and 60% of childhood ADHD cases will persist into adulthood. Even though the exact cause or causes of ADHD are unknown, it is known that ADHD is a neural-chemical problem that effects the management systems, or executive functions, of the brain. While the stereotypical child with ADHD exhibits many hyperactive and impulsive behaviors, there are actually three subtypes of ADHD: predominantly inattentive type, hyperactive-impulsive type, and combination type. Boys are at least two times as likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than girls, but girls are more likely than boys to have inattentive type ADHD. These school-aged girls are often not diagnosed because they sit quietly in their seats and do not pose a discipline problem in the classroom. This program will define ADHD and its subtypes, discuss possible causes, review the structures of the brain thought to be affected in ADHD, define executive function, and discuss current treatment options. An emphasis will be placed on presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of girls with inattentive-type ADHD.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders, characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, and restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior. Experts estimate that six children out of every 1,000 will have an ASD. Males are four times more likely to have an ASD than females. Passions and beliefs about the causes of Autism continue to run high. This program will review the recent clinical trials related to Autism Spectrum Disorder and review the findings as they relate to commonly held beliefs that can affect care and caregivers. A $10 donation will be made to Autism Speaks for each paid participant attending this program.

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for nearly 35 million office and hospital visits annually. Dyslipidemia accounts for more than 50% of the population-attributable vascular risk with only half of the individuals aware of their status. This presentation will review the pathophysiology of lipid disorders and discuss treatment guidelines in the management of hyperlipidemia for prevention of the cardiovascular consequences related to dyslipidemia.
