Program Overview:
Methadone is a synthetic opioid with potent analgesic effects. Although it is associated commonly with the treatment of opioid addiction, it may be prescribed for analgesia and for various pain syndromes. This knowledge based activity will educate pharmacists, technicians, and nurses on the skills and guidelines for safe management of opiate-dependent patients receiving methadone and to provide a basic understanding of methadone use in pain management.
Pharmacists Educational Objectives:
  • Describe the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of methadone
  • Given a simulated opioid-naïve patient, identify an appropriate starting dose of oral methadone
  • Given a simulated patient receiving an opioid, identify an appropriate equivalent dose of oral methadone

About The Speaker:
Mary Lynn McPherson

Dr. McPherson is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science. She serves as a consultant pharmacist for both local and national hospice and palliative care programs, and has designed a critical thinking process for appropriate drug use in end of life patients. She serves on the Board of the Hospice Network of Maryland, chairing the Education and Outreach Committee. She also serves on the Board of the Maryland Pain Initiative and the Advisory Board of the American Society of Pain Educators.

Dr. McPherson teaches extensively in the Pharm.D. curriculum on pain management and end of life care, including didactic and experiential content. McPherson also serves as a primary care pharmacist and Director of Pharmacotherapy Services at UniversityCare Waxter in Baltimore. She also developed one of the first and few palliative care pharmacy residencies in the U.S. McPherson is a Fellow in the American Pharmacists Association, American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists and American Society of Consultant Pharmacists. She has received many honors for her work, including the American Pharmacists Association Distinguished Achievement Award in Specialized Practice and the Maryland Pharmacists Association Innovative Practice Award. She has written three books, and many chapters and peer-reviewed articles on pain management, palliative care, and other topics.

Online Classroom System Requirments:
This is a live presentation delivered over the internet in an online classroom environment. In order to see, hear and participate in the class you must have the following:
  1. Broadband internet connection, such as T1, Cable or high-speed DSL.
  2. Computer speakers or headphones.
  3. Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher (Recommended), FireFox 3.0 or higher (with media player plugin), Safari 3.2 or higher, Google Chrome.
    We do not support AOL. It is recommended to minimize AOL and open an Internet Explorer or Firefox window.
    Mac Users we reccomend Safari or Firefox, but you will need to verify your Windows Media Player Plugin.
  4. Computer monitor with screen resolution set to 1024 x 768 pixils or higher.
  5. Windows Media Player plugin for your internet browser. Most computers come with the plugin already installed. But, it is still very important that you test to ensure you will be able to hear the class.
  6. Due to monitoring guidelines, computer sharing is NOT permitted. Credit is given to one user per computer.
