Understanding and Treating Chronic Pain-Does Gender Matter?

Location:

Target Audience:
Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Nursing
Program Overview:
Healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, often are barriers to improving the pain management of their patients primarily because of their lack of pain-management education and their unfounded fears and biases. Optimizing pain relief is crucial to helping a patient regain control of his or her life. Because pharmacotherapy plays a prominent role in treating chronic pain, it is also a perfect opportunity for the pharmacist to be involved. This program will enhance understanding of chronic pain, the gender gap, pharmacotherapy, counseling points, and information needed to work with the patient to reduce pain and improve quality of life.
Pharmacists Educational Objectives:
  • Describe the etiology and current epidemiology of chronic pain in the United States to include the challenges women face when seeking treatment for chronic pain
  • Compare and contrast the pharmacological approaches to the management of chronic pain (pharmacologic profiles, efficacy, side effects, & adverse events)
  • Describe strategies to counsel and educate patients on pain treatment goals and manage patient expectations — the reduction of pain, not necessarily its total elimination
Pharmacy Technicians Educational Objectives:
  • Describe the etiology and current epidemiology of chronic pain in the United States to include the challenges women face when seeking treatment for chronic pain
  • Compare and contrast the pharmacological approaches to the management of chronic pain (pharmacologic profiles, efficacy, side effects, & adverse events)
Nursing Educational Objectives:
  • Describe the etiology and current epidemiology of chronic pain in the United States to include the challenges women face when seeking treatment for chronic pain
