Program Overview:
Before the introduction of fluoxetine (Prozac) in 1987, there were few molecuar entities in the treatment arsenal for depression and the drug molecules that were available were limited in use by their side effects. Since 1987, the treatment options for depression has exploded with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitors (NDRI), and serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI) among others. With a large number of choices available, it is important to have some criteria to make the best choice of drug molecule to treat a patient's depressive symptoms Using knowledge of the positive effects on mood of certain key neurotransmitters can be one tool used in making an appropriate antidepressant choice. Because there are limits to the neurotransmitter theory of depression, it is also important to look to the future and become familiar with alternate theories of depression and the treatment that may soon be available based on these theories.

Healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, are often barriers to improving pain management of their patients primarily because of their lack of pain-management education and their unfounded fears and biases. Women are more likely than men to experience bias in treatment. Optimizing pain relief is crucial to helping a patient regain control of his or her life. Because pharmacotherapy plays a prominent role in treating chronic pain, it is also a perfect opportunity for the pharmacist to be involved. This program will satisfy the education need by creating a program for pharmacists that will enhance their understanding of chronic pain, identify the gender gap, pharmacotherapy, counseling points and information needed to work with the patient to reduce pain and improve quality of life.

Program Overview:
As a pharmacist it is important to know the laws an individual is subject to, and as a pharmacist of the United States, it is even more important to know that there are laws governing the profession on three different tiers: federal, state, and local. Each of these three categories can subject pharmacists to different standards of practice and may each define and punish regulation violations differently. With precedents for manslaughter by medication error, a pharmacist’s career and a patient’s depends on making sure each prescription filled is correct, but mistakes are made. When those mistakes happen, it is vital to know what is considered murder , a felony, a misdemeanor, and also a board action. This program will define and explain a number of important terms to pharmacy practice and law as well as give the attendee insight into how defendants are treated if they already possess a record of prior criminal or publicly unacceptable activity. Furthermore, this program will discuss methods and the importance of knowing and following the law.
