Program Overview: The population of the US is aging. The presentations included in this seminar will cover bodily changes which occur in handling of medications and two common conditions in older patients - COPD and Parkinson's Disease. Patient cases will be used to assist the learner in applying the information. Hands-on patient assessment skills will also be practiced.

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
  • List the common pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic changes which occur with aging
  • Identify medications which can commonly cause problems in the older patients
  • Describe the basic pathophysiology and clinical features of emphysema and chronic bronchitis
  • Discuss the role and value of the various pharmacotherapeutic options to manage COPD
  • Describe the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, including the difference between motor and non-motor symptoms
  • Discuss the role and value of the various pharmacotherapeutic options to manage both motor and non-motor symptoms
  • Assess a patient for disease control using both questioning, observation skills, and physical assessment
