  • Overview

CP would break out laughing uncontrollably at the most inappropriate times. HK often broke down crying for no apparent reason. Their family and friends were reluctant to interact with them socially for fear their laughing or crying would embarrass them at the most inopportune time. Both may be suffering from pseudobulbar affect or PBA. This little known illness can often occur in association with a variety of neurological disease and may be misdiagnosed as depression or bipolar disorder. When a patient visits your pharmacy and consults you about uncontrolled emotional outbursts (like laughter or crying), do you even think of PBA or do you know what it is? This activity will outline the common signs and symptoms of PBA, treatment options, and key counseling points on realistic goals of treatment and patient education.
