Program Overview
Seniors are particularly vunerable to chronic pain.  As we age, our bodies go through intense changes.  Optimizing pain relief is crucial to helping an aging patient regain or maintain control of his or her life.  Because pharmacotherapy plays a prominent role in treating chronic pain, it is also a perfect opportunity for the pharmacist to be involved.  This program will satisfy the education need by creating a program for pharmacists that will enhance their understanding of chronic pain, the challenges associated with treating an aging population, pharmacotherapy, counseling points, and information needed to work with the patient to reduce pain and improve quality of life.

Nurse Educational Objectives
  • Describe the etiology and current epidemiology of chronic pain in the US population and in senior citizens in particular
  • Compare and contrast the pharmacological approaches to the management of chronic pain (pharmacologic profiles, efficacy, side effects, & adverse events) with emphasis on the challenges associated with treating aging adults
  • Describe strategies to counsel and educate patients on pain treatment goals and manage patient expectations - the reduction of pain, not necessarily its total elimination
