  • Overview

    In the United States, diabetes is a major chronic disease. An estimated 29 million Americans have diabetes - of these nearly 28 million Americans have type 2 diabetes. Diabetes remains the 7th leading cause of death in this country, and people with diabetes are 1.7 times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than people without diabetes. Other potential complications of type 2 diabetes include cerebrovascular and peripheral vascular disease, retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy. In addition, hypoglycemic events associated with the disease account for approximately 282,000 emergency room visits every year.
