Program Overview
CDC estimates that more than one million people are living with HIV in the United States.  One in five of those people living with HIV is unaware of their infection.  Despite increases in the total number of people living with HIV in the US in recent years, the annual number of new HIV infections has remained relatively stable.  However, new infections continue at far too high a level, with an estimated 56,300 Americans becoming infected with HIV each year.  More than 18,000 people with AIDS still die each year in the US.  This knowledge based program will educate pharmacists in HIV treatment principles and current guidelines for use of antiretroviral therapy and offer insights into how pharmacists can make a difference in treatment outcomes.  This program is Florida BOP approved for HIV.

Nurse Educational Objectives
  • State the current Florida laws on AIDS and its impact on testing, confidentiality of test results, and treatment.
  • Provide an update on antiretroviral therapy (ARV) for HIV to include their mechanisms of action, efficacy, dosing, safety, and tolerability profiles, and first line combination therapy.
  • Compare and contrast two HIV patients with opposite therapeutic outcomes and describe the role pharmacists can play in educating and treating patients with HIV.
