Program Overview
Pharmacists frequently encounter patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding.  These patients often have questions about medications that are safe for the growing fetus, infant, and/or themselves.  Pharmacists need to be well-equipped to answer these questions.  Drug characteristics, FDA pregnancy categories, and drugs to avoid in pregnancy and lactation are important concepts to understand for rationale use of drug therapy.  Common acute conditions and chronic diseases in pregnancy and lactation will be reviewed so pharmacists can recommend appropriate pharmacotherapy to this patient population.  This presentation will use an evidence-based patient case format to enhance the learning and application of this information.
