Program Overview
Since October 2001, approximately 1.6 million members of the Armed Forces have served in Iraq or Afghanistan.  Moreover, we have more than 20 million veterans of military service in the United States today.  Now more than ever, pharmacists are likely to encounter veterans of our military suffering from chronic pain in the community setting.  Pain is a major driver for visits to physicians, a major reason for taking medications, a major cause of disability, and a key factor in quality of life and productivity in our veteran population.  This activity will focus on the current state of chronic pain management with a focus on our veteran population and the different challenges pharmacists may face when dealing with the veteran population.

Nurse Educational Objectives
  • Outline the current etiology and epidemiology of chronic pain in our population highlighting the different challenges associated with our military veterans.
  • Describe the pharmacological approaches to the management of chronic pain (pharmacologic profiles, efficacy, side effects, and adverse events)
  • Identify the barriers associated with chronic pain treatment and opioid therapy in particular and identify methods to minimize these impediments to treatment
