Program Overview
Currently there are an estimated 12 million U.S. adults with physician-diagnosed COPD.  Data suggests that approximately 24 million U.S. adults have evidence of impaired lung function, indicating that COPD is significantly underdiagnosed.  While COPD is not curable, early diagnosis, proper treatment, and patient adherence can slow the progress of the disease.  However, depression and anxiety are common comorbidities for the COPD patient, both of which undercut nearly all facets of potential treatments, such as medication adherence, smoking cessation, exercise regimens, and lifestyle modification.  This presentation shows how pharmacists interventions for COPD patients can improve, to varying degrees, positive patient outcomes on all fronts.  Thus, it is vital for pharmacists to understand the recommendations for communicating with and counseling the COPD patient.
