Program Overview
Poor medication adherence and compliance are serious issues in the management of chronic conditions.  A mounting body of evidence indicates that decreased medication adherence is associated with increased hospitalizations and total costs of care.  This presentation reviews strategies pharmacists may employ to increase overall compliance and adherence rates.

Nurse Educational Objectives
  • List barriers to providers and patients that affect medication adherence.
  • Describe methods and available tools that can help determine (and predict) factors behind a patient's non-adherence or potential non-adherence with medication therapy.
Pharmacist Educational Objectives
  • List barriers to providers and patients that affect medication adherence.
  • Describe methods and available tools that can help determine (and predict) factors behind a patient's non-adherence or potential non-adherence with medication therapy.
  • Show examples of how pharmacists can implement medication adherence programs in the retail pharmacy setting.
Pharmacy Technician Educational Objectives
  • Give examples of open ended questions that could be asked of patients to determine the need for adherence counseling
  • Summarize specific points that can be used in addressing the behavioral obstacles of non-adherence
