    • Overview

Cough is one of the most common reasons patients will seek advice from pharmacists in the community setting.  It is also a leading cause of primary care provider and emergency room visits.  Coughing is a complex, natural and important reflex that helps clear secretions, and protects us from aspirating foreign materials that can be harmful to the airways.  While coughing is a defense mechanism, it can be acute and simply be a nuisance or chronic and lead to complications both physically and psychologically. It is essential for pharmacists to have an understanding of the basic mechanisms of a cough as well as the various causes to help determine which patients are candidates for self-management or those requiring referral.  The focus of this presentation will be providing education on the pathophysiology and types of cough as well as briefly reviewing the current treatment guidelines and future treatment modalities.
