    • Overview

As the impacts of the COVID pandemic continue to unfold, concerning correlations between COVID-19 and diabetes have surfaced. The CDC has reported that three-quarters of patients who died from COVID-19 had at least one pre-existing condition, with diabetes noted as the primary underlying condition for approximately 40% of these patients. And, while clinicians inherently understood the role that uncontrolled diabetes played in elevating complications, another phenomenon was less anticipated.  Literature has documented a number of cases of NEW ONSET diabetes among COVID-19 patients, with one study reporting that 14.4% of patients hospitalized with severe COVID-19 actually developed diabetes! This session seeks to examine the links and correlations between COVID-19 and diabetes and explore the effects of diabetes medications on COVID and, conversely, the effects of COVID-19 therapies on diabetes.
