    • Overview

The 2017 Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) creates a global strategy and standard for diagnosis, management, and prevention of COPD. All heath care providers should be familiar with the evidence based recommendations for treatment found in the initiative and work diligently to implement these recommendations. Despite the strong evidence that the GOLD guidelines work for patients with COPD, guideline adoption continues to lag. In fact, a review of a data retrospectively indicates that many patients still do not receive pharmacotherapy IAW GOLD; nor do they receive pulmonary rehabilitation as part of an integrated disease management plan. This knowledge based program will give pharmacists an understanding of GOLD and enable them to assist and counsel COPD patients on pharmaceutical treatment, lifestyle changes, adherence, and possible follow-up with the proper medical professional when necessary.
