    • Overview

Many patients assume that over-the-counter drugs are safe, even when taking more than the recommended dosage, but quite the opposite is true. Many OTC drugs cause severe toxicity and even death when taken in large doses. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians need to stress the importance of reading labels and following directions. It's important to be aware of the toxicity of OTC drugs such as acetaminophen and aspirin, and to suggest appropriate actions if an overdose occurs.
