      This session is part of the Pain Management Specialty Pharmacist series. It explores the effective management of pain within the context of the current opioid crisis. This session seeks to explore appropriate patient recommendations regarding opioid interactions. The severity of various sedative drug-drug interactions (e.g. opioid and benzodiazepine) is evaluated within the context of current FDA recommendations.

      Identify appropriate patient recommendations and explanations regarding opioid interactions involving enzyme and transporter overlap, pharmacogenetic factors, gender differences, age differences, serotonergic effect duplication, and concurrent sedatives.
      Determine the severity to any given patient scenario of sedative drug-drug interactions (e.g. opioid and benzodiazepine) as observed in common drug interaction reviewing software, and identify an appropriate application of the FDA recommendations for such interactions.
      Recognize the powerful impact drug-drug sedative interactions have on the increased risk of adverse effects such as general patient harm, additive sedation, and overdose.
