    • Overview

The Hispanic population is rapidly growing throughout the United States. "Hispanic" and "Latino" are terms that are often used interchangeably to describe individuals from Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Central America, and South America. The National Council of La Raza, estimates that there are 50.6 million Hispanic people living in this country. In Maryland, Hispanics are the second largest minority group. The population of Hispanics in the state grew by 48% between 2000 and 2006 and is projected to continue increase over the next several years. High rates of Hispanic patients face barriers to receiving optimal health care including lack of health coverage and low socioeconomic status. In 2014 27% of Hispanics living in Maryland did not have health insurance, 13% were living under the poverty level, and 56% did not own their own home. Other barriers include low education levels, cultural beliefs about health care, and difficulty communicating with health care professionals. These social determinants impact the recognition, management and outcomes related to common chronic medical conditions including obesity, diabetes and hypertension.
