    • Overview

Chronic pain is a significant problem in the United States (US) that affects 100 million people, more than the combined number of patients with diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and cancer. Opioids are commonly used to treat chronic cancer-related pain and chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP), with approximately 250 million prescriptions written annually in the US. Constipation is one of the most common side effects of opioid-use, affecting 15-90% of patients with CNCP and up to 90% of patients with cancer pain. The discomfort from opioid-induced constipation (OIC) may lead to discontinuation of opioids and consequently to increased pain.
