    • Overview

With people generally living longer and the "baby boomer" generation rapidly entering into the geriatric population (≥ 65y.o.), there is a growing need for a concentration on tending to the healthcare needs of this specific population. In October of 2015, a new update to the Beers List of Medications was released, with updates based on newer evidence based literature reviews. This was the first update since 2012, and as a follow-up to a previous freeCE presentation on the Beers List, we will first review the pertinent updates since the last Beers List update, and certainly review the general suggestions overall. As a primer, we will review the differences among generations with regards to sociological and psychological factors, and then the changing physiology of a typical geriatric patient, which is the driving force for the changes in medication selection and dosage. We will also discuss pertinent geriatric references and certifications for more information as well. Most importantly drugs to avoid in the elderly (DAE), high risk medications for use in the elderly (HRMEs), drug-drug interactions to avoid in the elderly, and medications to use with caution in certain medical conditions (especially compromised kidney function) will be discussed in regards to safety and clinically relevant alternatives.
