    • Overview

Opioid overdoses and deaths have been increasing at an alarming rate. The over-prescribing and misuse of prescription opioids in recent years has led to heroin abuse, overdoses and deaths in numbers never seen before. Contributing to these deaths has been the contamination of heroin with fentanyl, fentanyl analogs, and other synthetic opioids. Abuse-deterrent formulations, prescription drug monitoring programs and "bystander" naloxone availability are some of the strategies being used to attempt to prevent opioid overdose deaths.
