    • Overview

Over 20 million people take cruise ships each year. Sixty percent of those passengers come from North America. In addition, the US civilian population overseas has been estimated to be between 3.6 and 4.3 million, many of them in non-Western countries. Numerous people get sick on their way to their destination as well as once they get to their destination. Noroviruses are recognized as the leading cause of human acute viral gastroenteritis worldwide. The rate of outbreaks on cruise ships has grown significantly in recent years. Given the potentially harmful consequences of outbreaks for passengers and crew members and the subsequently high costs for cruise companies, disease outbreaks on cruise ships represent a serious public health issue. This monograph will contain methods by which the pharmacist can counsel patients about contracting diseases on their way to or at the countries they are visiting. This program will also review what is involved in putting together a travel first aid kit, where and what diseases are most prevalent in the region where a patient is going, cruise ship hygiene, what vaccines are available to prevent against certain diseases, and why mosquitoes make such good vectors for disease.
