    • Overview

As the national opioid crisis looms, pharmacists increasingly find themselves faced with patient counseling initiatives ranging from various treatment regimens, to available community resources, to the appropriate management of accidental overdosage. This session seeks to critically examine the diagnosis of substance use disorder using both a pharmacologic and sociologic lens.  Significant patient counseling points are stressed, including the use of less stigmatic terminology in patient communications.
