    • Overview

Upper respiratory illness, including the common cold and influenza, occur frequently throughout the year. Therapies for the common cold include medications that manage symptoms but do not shorten the duration of viral infection. Approved medications may shorten the duration of influenza but are available only with a prescription. Patients may look to community and ambulatory care pharmacists for recommendations of viral illness alternative therapies. Retailers sell products like elderberry syrup for immune support, but are they safe and effective? This monograph will detail the characteristics of the elder plant, active ingredients and antiviral mechanisms of elderberries, and safety information for elderberry use. A detailed summary of available human research will allow the reader to define effectiveness of elderberry for upper respiratory viral illness and support therapeutic recommendations with data from in vivo studies.
