    • Overview

Sepsis is the body’s overwhelming response to infection, which can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, amputations, and death. Each year, at least 1.7 million adults in the United States develop sepsis, and nearly 270,000 Americans die because of sepsis. One third of patient who die in the hospital have sepsis. This educational activity will prepare learners to identify differences in vasopressor agents used in septic shock, including which agents are recommended for use prior to starting other agents as well as which agents are generally avoided. The participant will be able to recognize adverse effects commonly associated with vasopressors, and how earlier initiation of vasopressors can improve patient outcomes such as time to goal blood pressure and mortality. Finally, the participant will be able to describe medications that are utilized as septic shock is resolving. After this presentation, the participant will be more competent and confident in caring for a patient with septic shock across the spectrum of the disease state.
