Overview
For some women, the benefits of oral contraceptives (OCs) outweigh the side effects and risks. Certainly, the risks of OCs can be less than the risks of pregnancy and giving birth. In fact, among users of various contraceptive methods, OC users show slightly reduced all-cause mortality. However, those with certain medical conditions or those who experience adverse side effects – including breakthrough bleeding, dizziness, headache, lightheadedness, bloating, or nausea – while using oral contraceptives, may need to choose alternative contraceptive methods. Health care practitioners screen for the major contraindications, but many women are unaware of even the lesser risks, such as possible vitamin deficiencies or post-pill amenorrhea. However, even among well-nourished women for whom OCs are not contraindicated, the pill can result in other biological changes that pose long-term health risks. Other hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control patches and injections, produce side effects and risks similar to oral contraceptives. These dangers apply as well to women who are on hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Combined, this translates into a large, at-risk population. Still, with OC- and HRT-caused changes suspected in the long-term development of serious health risks, safe interventions that may ameliorate those risks are of great interest. Integrative medical interventions, functional foods, and lifestyle factors offer promise.
