  • Overview

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States, infecting more than 6 million new people each year. At least 50% of sexually active people will be infected with HPV at some point during their lifetime. More than 200 strains of HPV have been identified with results of infection ranging the spectrum from genital warts to multiple types of cancers. Three vaccines active against the HPV strains most commonly involved in development of genital warts and cancers have been approved for use in males and females. Many practitioners are not aware of the risks associated with HPV and the benefits involved with appropriate vaccination. Additionally, concerns related to potential adverse effects may lead to less than ideal vaccination rates.
