Georgia Board of Pharmacy

Georgia CE Requirements For Pharmacists

Pharmacy licenses can be verified through the Georgia Department of Community Health.

Georgia Board of Pharmacy licensees must renew their licenses biennially to maintain the right to practice. Pharmacist licenses must be renewed by December 31 of each even-numbered year.

Late renewals will be accepted until January 31 of the following year, but late renewals will incur an additional late renewal fee. Licenses not renewed by January 31 of the year following the renewal deadline will be revoked.

Biennial Continuing Education Requirements
Required Subject Area Required Number of Hours
General Hours 30
CE Requirements for Your First Biennium Renewal
If you were licensed before or during the first six months of the biennium (January to June), you must earn 30 hours of continuing education. If your first biennium license renewal occurs 12 months or more after your initial licensure date:
Required Subject Area Required Number of Hours*
General Hours 30
If you were licensed during the following twelve months, you must earn 15 hours of continuing education. *Note: If you were licensed during the last six months of the biennium, you are exempt from continuing education for that biennium only.
Required Subject Area Required Number of Hours
General Hours 15
Special Pharmacy Practice
Pharmacists in the state of Georgia who have a specialty pharmacy practice must complete ten hours of continuing education in each specific area of specialty during the biennium renewal period. These ten hours can count toward the total thirty hours required for all pharmacists.

Not all pharmacists will need to report their continuing education credits along with their renewal applications. If you are randomly selected for an audit, you will receive specific instructions on how to submit proof of your continuing education credits.

The board instructs all licensed pharmacists to maintain their certificates of attendance (or other proof of CE credit completion) for two years after the preceding renewal period.

Tracking CE in Georgia with CPE Monitor

What is CPE Monitor?

CPE Monitor is an electronic tracking system provided by ACPE and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP). It allows pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to easily track their completed continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credits.

How does it work?

Continuing education providers report credits to CPE Monitor after a participant completes their program using the participant’s NABP e-Profile ID and date of birth. The Georgia State Board of Pharmacy can then use CPE Monitor to electronically validate the completed credits.

Chapter 480-3 Renewals, Inactive Licenses, and Continuing Education A. Rule 480-3-.01 Pharmacist Renewals Each pharmacist license will expire and must be renewed by December 31st of the even numbered years. Licenses not renewed by December 31st of the even number years may be late renewed by January 31st of the following year by payment of the current renewal fee, plus an additional late renewal fee of 50% of the renewal fee. Any license not renewed by January 31st of the year following the renewal date deadline, shall automatically become classified as “Administratively Revoked”. The practice of pharmacy with an expired or administratively revoked license is prohibited by law, and practice during this period may result in disciplinary action for unlicensed practice. B. Rule 480-3-.02 Inactive License Pharmacists who wish to have their license placed on inactive status may do so by requesting such status in writing, with an explanation of the request, to the Board. Pharmacists requesting inactive status must have an active license in good standing which includes meeting the continuing education requirements as outlined in Board Policy. Pharmacists who wish to retain their license may apply for an inactive status as outlined in 480-3-.02(1). Pharmacists holding an inactive license may not practice pharmacy. An individual with an inactive license does not have to meet the continuing education requirements for subsequent renewal periods. Pharmacists who wish to reactivate their license must complete and submit the proper application and meet the requirements of the Board for reactivation as set forth in Board Policy. C. Rule 480-3-.03 Continuing Pharmacy Education The Georgia State Board of Pharmacy has the statutory responsibility and authority for the requirement of continuing education as prerequisite for a license renewal. The Georgia State Board of Pharmacy does have reciprocity with all states. The only caveat pertains to California applicants. Georgia has reciprocity with applicants who were licensed in California after 2004. If you were licensed in California before 2004, you must take the complete pharmacy examination (practical and MPJE).
