  • Overview

When thinking about contraceptive options, many providers (pharmacists included) do not think beyond "typical" combined hormonal contraceptive options such as the pill, patch or vaginal ring. Long acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) such as IUDs and the rod implant are highly effective options that have recently come into favor as first line recommendations for appropriate patients, including teenagers and women who have never been pregnant. There is a gap in knowledge which leads to a lack of application and appropriate use of these options. This program will begin with a brief review of key concepts related to LARCs, including efficacy, mechanism of action, side effect profiles. There will be special attention given to exploring the recommended place in therapy based on stage of a woman's reproductive lifespan (ie: adolescence, college, family planning, etc.) and highlighting patient specific factors that would indicate a woman is an appropriate or inappropriate candidate for a LARC. Because pharmacist prescribing of contraceptives is a reality in two states currently (and on the horizon in multiple other states), there will be a discussion of the most appropriate approaches to discussing contraceptives with women (ie: from most effective to least effective), as well as the appropriate way for the woman to obtain her selected method (ie: in the pharmacy or via the physician/clinic). Lastly, participants will be given the opportunity to apply concepts to patient cases.
