    • Overview

Estimates indicate that more than half of all contact lens wearers experience problems related to contact lens wear at some point.  The problems arise from type of lens a person wears, wearing schedules or adherence to caring regimens.  Pharmacists, particularly those practicing in the community setting, are often the most easily accessed health care team member and first to hear of a patient’s problem with their lenses.  Unfortunately, even pharmacists who wear contact lens find that they have questions and concerns about appropriate lens care management.  Most schools of pharmacy do not cover the area of ophthalmology to any appreciable extent in the curriculum, so very few practicing pharmacists have a high level of comfort when dealing with issues relating to the contact lens wear that they may see on a day to day basis. While pharmacists don’t need to be experts in treating contact lens issues, this knowledge based program will prepare them to give patients appropriate and common sense advice on lens care management to optimize adherence as it relates to lens wearing schedules and appropriate cleaning techniques and minimize “drop out” rates for contact lens wearers.
