    • Overview

Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic disorder of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by chronic abdominal pain and altered bowel habits. Approximately 10 to 15 percent of adults and adolescents have symptoms consistent with irritable bowel syndrome, and although not all individuals with irritable bowel syndrome seek medical care, patients with irritable bowel syndrome make up a significant percentage of all outpatient visits to clinicians. It is important that healthcare professionals to be aware of patients with IBS so they can assist in their diagnosis and treatment.
