The Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) training program prepares pharmacy technicians to support pharmacists in delivering clinical testing services in a variety of pharmacy settings. Through four comprehensive modules, participants develop the skills needed to collect specimens, perform CLIA-waived tests, document results, and maintain regulatory compliance. This PTCB-recognized program enhances technician competence in supporting patient care and expanding pharmacy-based clinical services.
Each pharmacy technician must identify a qualified preceptor to supervise the hands-on training portion of the course. The technician will work with their onsite preceptor to demonstrate the skills learned in the training.
The Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) training program is designed to equip pharmacy technicians with the knowledge and practical skills needed to support point-of-care testing services in community pharmacy and ambulatory care environments. As pharmacies continue to expand their role in preventive and clinical care, technicians play a vital role in ensuring testing services are delivered safely, accurately, and in compliance with regulatory standards.
This PTCB-recognized program consists of four structured modules that provide comprehensive instruction on common CLIA-waived tests used in community pharmacy practice, as well as vital signs measurement and focused health history collection. Participants learn proper specimen collection techniques, testing procedures, quality control practices, documentation requirements, and infection prevention strategies. The program also emphasizes workflow integration and collaboration with pharmacists to support efficient service delivery.
Throughout the program, learners develop practical competencies in performing point-of-care tests, maintaining equipment, recording and reporting results, and adhering to applicable regulatory and organizational policies. Special attention is given to compliance with CLIA requirements and best practices for patient privacy, safety, and data management.
