This continuing education activity will provide pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with a practical approach to flavoring and sweetening compounded medications. During this program, participants will examine the physiology of taste, understand why medications have bitter or unpleasant tastes, and learn patient-centered approaches to selecting appropriate flavoring and sweetening agents. This program will also review common taste-masking and sweetening techniques. To support improved medication adherence within diverse patient populations, strategies for customizing compounded preparations for pediatric, geriatric, and veterinary patients will be described.
