Pain management in older adults involves more moving parts than a single guideline can capture: age-related physiology, polypharmacy risk, Beers Criteria alternatives, and deprescribing all factor in. This 3-hour, board-approved course brings those pieces together, building practical, case-tested skills as you work toward Florida’s consultant pharmacist CE requirement.
Pain Management in Older Adults is a comprehensive educational activity designed to enhance consultant pharmacists’ knowledge of evidence-based pain assessment and management in older adults.
The program begins with a 1-hour expert-led webinar that reviews age-related changes affecting pain management, principles of comprehensive pain assessment, pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment strategies, and practical approaches to medication optimization using geriatric prescribing tools.
Learners then apply these concepts through interactive, case-based activities focused on identifying potentially inappropriate medications using the 2023 AGS Beers Criteria, evaluating anticholinergic burden, applying the STOPP/START criteria, assessing medications requiring renal dose adjustment, and developing patient-centered deprescribing and medication optimization plans.
Three progressively complex patient cases reinforce clinical decision-making and prioritize interventions to reduce medication-related harm while maintaining effective pain control. Through a combination of evidence-based instruction, interactive learning exercises, and realistic patient scenarios, participants will strengthen their ability to optimize pain management, reduce polypharmacy, preserve function, and improve quality of life for older adults with chronic pain.

Approved consultant pharmacist hours can’t be applied to your standard license renewal if you use them for your consultant license, and duplicate courses can’t be counted twice. These courses are built specifically for the consultant pharmacist requirement.
Florida requires 24 hours of consultant-specific CE per renewal cycle. This course covers 3 of those hours. You’ll need additional courses to meet the full requirement.
