Nicotine dependence can be challenging to manage, particularly in older adults with chronic conditions, complex medication regimens, and a history of unsuccessful cessation attempts.
This 3-hour program, Nicotine Cessation for Consultant Pharmacists, equips consultant pharmacists with the knowledge and clinical decision-making skills needed to support individualized nicotine product cessation.
Learners will begin with a 1-hour webinar exploring nicotine-containing products, evidence-based cessation strategies, behavioral approaches, and appropriate use and counseling of nicotine replacement therapy, bupropion, and varenicline.
Learners will then examine recommendations from the 2021 AAFP, 2024 WHO, and 2026 VA/DoD cessation guidelines, comparing approaches to behavioral support, pharmacotherapy, and ongoing treatment.
Finally, interactive patient cases will challenge learners to assess nicotine dependence, select and optimize cessation therapies, address comorbidities and medication-related considerations, provide patient-centered counseling, and develop comprehensive cessation plans for complex older adults.
