Hopefully we’ll all end up being a geriatric patient at some point in our lives, right? So, why not start specializing in geriatric care ahead of time? Or, at least start reviewing what the experts recommend, of course!
Welcome to the room: The recent AGS Beers Criteria Update (released in 2023, ironically enough).
As a primer, we will review the differences among generations with regards to sociological and psychological factors, and then the changing physiology of a typical geriatric patient, which is the driving force for the changes in medication selection and dosage. We will first review the pertinent updates since the last 2019 Beers List update, and certainly discuss overall general suggestions, including potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) for utilization with geriatric patients, disease state-specific recommendations (particularly kidney function decline), drug-drug interactions of highest concern, and much more.
