PTCB vs. NHA: How to Choose the Right Pharmacy Technician Certification

If you’re preparing to take your pharmacy technician certification exam, you’ll encounter two names almost immediately: PTCB and NHA. Both are nationally recognized. Both award the same credential, the Certified Pharmacy Technician, or CPhT. Both are accepted in all 50 states. So the question of which one to pursue isn’t about quality or legitimacy. It’s about fit. Understanding what actually separates these two exams, and what that means for how you prepare and where you end up working, is what this piece covers. 

What Are PTCB and NHA? 

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) was established in 1995 by a coalition of national pharmacy organizations, including the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The PTCB’s flagship exam is the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam, or PTCE.

The National Healthcareer Association (NHA) is a multi-profession credentialing organization that certifies healthcare workers across approximately eight to nine different disciplines, including medical assisting, EKG technicians, and pharmacy technicians. Their pharmacy technician exam is the ExCPT (Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians).

What Credential Do Both Exams Award? 

Both the PTCE and the ExCPT confer the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) designation. From a credential standpoint, there is no difference in what you put after your name or what state boards of pharmacy recognize. The CPhT earned through either exam is the same designation, accepted across all 50 states.

What’s on the PTCE vs. the ExCPT? 

Both exams test core pharmacy knowledge: medications, pharmacy laws, patient safety and quality assurance, and the dispensing process. The content domains are quite similar, but there are some differences in content and weighting. The PTCE is organized into four knowledge domains as outlined by PTCB. It has been updated most recently to reflect current pharmacy practice standards. 

The ExCPT has a different domain weighting. One notable difference: the NHA ExCPT explicitly covers sterile compounding content, including IV preparation fundamentals. If you have hospital or home infusion experience and plan to work in a setting where IV compounding is central to the role, this is worth factoring in. 

Sarah Lawrence, PharmD, Director of Pharmacy Technician Education at PharmCon, explained it this way during a recent PharmCon freeCE career panel: “Those with hospital or sterile compounding experience will find that knowledge tested on the ExCPT, but not on the PTCE. Certification with NHA might be a good fit as long as it’s acceptable to your employer.”  

Does It Matter Which Certification You Choose? 

For most pharmacy technicians, in most employment settings, the practical difference between PTCB and NHA is small. Employer preference is the most important variable, and that preference tilts toward PTCB in most retail and health-system environments, in part because of PTCB’s longer history in the profession and its connections to the major pharmacy professional associations. 

That said, “employer preference” is a real thing you should verify, not assume. Some employers specify PTCB. Others accept either. Asking before you register is a one-minute step that can save you from preparing for the wrong exam.

How Should You Decide Between PTCB and NHA? 

Work through these questions in order: 

1. Does your employer or target employer specify a preference? If yes, that’s your answer. 
2. Does your training program align with one exam? Some programs are designed around PTCB’s content domains; others around NHA’s. Check what your program prepares you for. 
3. Do you have sterile compounding experience? If you’ve worked in a hospital or infusion pharmacy and compounding is part of your intended practice area, the ExCPT’s sterile compounding coverage may be a better fit, assuming your employer accepts both. 
4. Are you planning to pursue advanced credentials? PTCB offers a broader stack of post-CPhT specialty certifications, including the Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT) and CPhT-Adv designations. If advanced credentials are in your plan, starting with PTCB keeps more pathways open. 

If none of these factors clearly point to one over the other, either exam will serve you well. As Sarah Lawrence put it: “I don’t know that there’s any reason to pick one over the other. Your employer may have a preference, or you may enroll in a training program that prepares you more for one certification versus the other. Either way, you can feel confident with either certification.” 

How Do You Maintain Your CPhT Certification? 

Both certifications require renewal every two years. The requirements are nearly identical: 20 CE hours, including 1 hour of pharmacy law and 1 hour of patient safety. Neither exam requires you to sit for the certification exam again after the initial pass. Continuing education is how you keep the credential current from there forward. 

Meredith Ayers, CPhT-Adv, CHW, who holds both a base CPhT and advanced credentials, is candid about what that ongoing education commitment means in practice: “My advanced pharmacy tech certification requires more than that, so it’s a lot of education to keep up, which is a good thing. We don’t want to dull our knives.” 

State boards of pharmacy may require additional CE beyond the PTCB or NHA minimum. Check your state’s requirements directly, as they vary.
