The knowledge gap for pain and addiction exists in several key areas, affecting how we understand, treat, and manage both conditions. These gaps stem from the complexity of pain mechanisms, the biological and psychological nature of addiction, and the challenges of balancing effective pain relief with the risk of substance dependence. Addressing these gaps requires a multidisciplinary approach, including neuroscience research, improved clinical guidelines, public health policies, and patient-centered care. Enhanced education for both healthcare providers and patients will also help bridge these divides.

In the forty plus years (1981- present) that he has worked in pharmacy, Professor Pete Kreckel has dispensed millions of prescriptions, and all of them were dispensed with the intention of helping people feel better, prolong their life, decrease their suffering, and improve their health overall. This presentation will focus on drugs (and their dark sides!) that he has dispensed over the years. The “dark side” of pharmacotherapy includes drugs that were approved and removed, as well as still approved drugs with a very storied history. Although all of us pharmacists and technicians live by the saying “primum non nocere”, history indeed shows that frequently we have done the opposite.

Participants will learn how these programs operate, how they are funded, and their impact on public health and patient care outcomes.

Event Details
This program provides an evidence-based overview of outpatient management strategies for alcohol use disorder (AUD). Participants will learn to assess withdrawal severity using validated tools such as CIWA-Ar, select appropriate pharmacologic agents for acute withdrawal, and apply guideline-recommended therapies for long-term relapse prevention. The course reviews FDA-approved treatments including naltrexone, acamprosate, and disulfiram, along with emerging options such as topiramate. Practical considerations for medication selection, monitoring, and patient-centered care will also be discussed to support pharmacists in optimizing outcomes for patients with AUD.
