While menopause is a normal part of aging there are many symptoms that are overlooked by clinicians as well as patients. There is also lack of awareness and access to menopause-related information for many patients. There are numerous health conditions that may be associated with menopause which both clinicians and patients need to be aware of. An update on the use of hormonal therapy is warranted with new information regarding the WHI study. In addition, this program would review new medications that are available to treat specific menopause symptoms.

Event Details
While pharmacists are well-trained to assist human patients in selecting over-the-counter (OTC) medications that are safe and effective, they may not recognize the dangers these medications present to companion animals, such as cats and dogs. By law, pharmacists cannot independently recommend OTC medications for veterinary patients, but they can educate pet owners on the risks of treating their pets with unsafe OTC products. This activity will review common OTC products and their adverse effects in cats and dogs. Treatment options for pets exposed to these medications will also be discussed.

Recently, new guidelines were published for the management of acetaminophen poisoning. These guidelines suggested a new toxic dose, made recommendations for when to start and stop acetylcysteine empirically, and other changes. Additionally, many people are using fomepizole and high-dose n-acetylcysteine for the treatment of acetaminophen poisoning, but the data are quite limited. Finally, emerging evidence suggests that prolonged administration of acetylcysteine may actually be harmful. This presentation will address these updates, alternative therapies, and emerging data.

The transgender and gender non-conforming community face considerable barriers to quality of healthcare. These individuals have had a difficult time finding healthcare and thus are less likely to seek proper treatment. Pharmacists are uniquely positioned as healthcare professionals to not only counsel patients on medication use but also offer a final crosscheck to ensure optimal adherence and health outcomes. As such, pharmacists require education on the unique needs to this community and the challenges they face.

While menopause is a normal part of aging there are many symptoms that are overlooked by clinicians as well as patients.
