This program examines the challenges presented to the pharmacy care team by patients who prove to be “difficult” in ways that may create obstacles to the provision of quality pharmaceutical products and services. Providing appropriate care for the “difficult” patient can reduce exposure to legal liabilities, such as malpractice lawsuits or regulatory agency actions. This program emphasizes the need to respectfully care for patients, even if their approach to the pharmacy team is disrespectful or otherwise problematic. Using the legal case study method, this program considers situations in which “difficult” patients have presented obstacles for the pharmacy care team to overcome, and the lessons that can be learned from those legal cases.
