Virginia Board of Pharmacy

Virginia CE Requirements For Pharmacists

Virginia Board of Pharmacy licensees must renew their licenses annually to maintain the right to practice.

The renewal period is between January 1 and December 31. If you are newly licensed after October 1, you do not need to renew your license until December 31 of the following year. However, if you were licensed before October 1, you will need to complete all 15 hours of approved CE by December 31 of the year in which you were licensed.

Annual Continuing Education Requirements
General Hours 12
Live Hours 3
Total Hours Required 15
Can I get CE credit for serving as a preceptor for a pharmacy student or resident in an accredited school or program?
Yes. You have to complete the form located on the Virginia Board of Pharmacy website under “Forms and Applications.” Keep the completed form in your records for two years following your renewal in case your CE is audited.
Can I get CE credit for volunteering at a free clinic or local health department?
Yes. Up to 2 contact hours of the required 15 contact hours can be satisfied through delivery of free pharmacy services to low-income individuals through a local health department or a free clinic organized completely or primarily for those services to be delivered. 1 hour of continuing education may be credited for 3 hours of providing volunteer services, as documented by the health department or free clinic on the Continuing Education (CE) Credit Form for Volunteer Practice located on the Virginia Board of Pharmacy website. These credit hours can be used toward the live CE requirement.
May I carry my extra hours over to next year?
No. Virginia law does not allow the carryover of continuing education hours into the next calendar year.
Can I obtain an extension?
Yes. You can potentially get a one-time extension if you make a request to the Board in writing prior to renewing. Any additional extensions will only be granted if good cause is shown.

Pharmacists can track their completed CE credits on NABP CPE Monitor, a collaborative service from NABP and ACPE. To get credit for ACPE-approved CE, you’ll need to receive an ID number from CPE Monitor through www.nabp.pharmacy. You must report all ACPE-approved continuing pharmaceutical education to CPE Monitor within 60 days of course completion.

Tracking CE in Virginia with CPE Monitor

What is CPE Monitor?

CPE Monitor is an electronic tracking system provided by ACPE and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP). It allows pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to easily track their completed continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credits.

How does it work?

Continuing education providers report credits to CPE Monitor after a participant completes their program using the participant’s NABP e-Profile ID and date of birth. The Virginia State Board of Pharmacy can then use CPE Monitor to electronically validate the completed credits.

54.1-3314.1. Continuing education requirements; exemptions; extensions; procedures; out-of-state licensees; nonpractice licenses. A. Each pharmacist shall have obtained a minimum of 15 continuing education hours of pharmaceutical education through an approved continuing pharmaceutical education program during the year immediately preceding his license renewal date. B. An approved continuing pharmaceutical education program shall be any program approved by the Board. C. Pharmacists who have been initially licensed by the Board during the one year preceding the license renewal date shall not be required to comply with the requirement on the first license renewal date that would immediately follow. D. The Board may grant an exemption from the continuing education requirement if the pharmacist presents evidence that failure to comply was due to circumstances beyond the control of the pharmacist. E. Upon the written request of a pharmacist, the Board may grant an extension of one year in order for a pharmacist to fulfill the continuing education requirements for the period of time in question. Such extension shall not relieve the pharmacist of complying with the continuing education requirement for the current period. F. The pharmacist shall attest to the fact that he has completed the continuing education requirements as specified by the Board. G. The following shall apply to the requirements for continuing pharmaceutical education: 1. The provider of an approved continuing education program shall issue to each pharmacist who has successfully completed a program certification that the pharmacist has completed a specified number of hours. 2. The certificates so issued to the pharmacist shall be maintained by the pharmacist for a period of two years following the renewal of his license. 3. The pharmacist shall provide the Board, upon request, with certification of completion of continuing education programs in a manner to be determined by the Board. H. Pharmacists who are also licensed in other states and who have obtained a minimum of fifteen hours of approved continuing education requirements of such other states need not obtain additional hours. I. The Board shall provide for an inactive status for those pharmacists who do not wish to practice in Virginia. The Board shall require upon request for change from inactive to active status proof of continuing education hours as specified in regulations. No person shall practice in Virginia unless he holds a current active license. J. As part of the annual 15-hour requirement, the Board may require up to two hours of continuing education in a specific subject area. If the Board designates a subject area for continuing education, it shall publish such requirement no later than January 1 of the calendar year for which the specific continuing education is required. (1992, c. 868; 2008, c. 672.) This is the latest version of Rule: 54.1-3314.1. as of July 1, 2022. Please refer to the Code of Virginia for the most updated information.
To get a pharmacist license in Virginia by reciprocity (also called “licensure by endorsement” or “license transfer”) you must complete the licensure transfer application process through the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP). Your educational credentials, licensure status, and any possible disciplinary action will be reviewed to ensure they comply with Virginia’s requirements. You must then complete the online pharmacist application and submit payment. As of July 1, 2016, Virginia is a participant of the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE). You can apply for the Virginia MPJE on the NABP website while waiting for your applications to be approved. Once the Board approves this application, you can register for the MPJE. More information about this process can be found in the Virginia Board of Pharmacy Guidance Documents: Guidance Document 110-2 and the Pharmacist Timeline by Endorsement. If you are a graduate of a foreign school of pharmacy, refer to Guidance Document 110-17.

As a prerequisite for license renewal, Pharmacists in Virginia must complete 15 contact hours of continuing education (CE) per year, 3 of which must be live.

There are two routes to licensure in Virginia: through examination and through endorsement. For complete information on how to apply for a license in Virginia, refer to the Virginia Board of Pharmacy Guidance Document 110-2.
